How Sweet it is…

I know I’m a little behind the blogging eight-ball, what with this Valentine’s Day post being over a week late. But, in my defense, my laptop decided to commit hard drive suicide and was taken from my clenched hands for the past month. Nevertheless, it’s back beneath my eagerly typing fingers for another round of mouthwatering words.

Nothing says “I love you” better than a full belly. That’s why I decided to make my sweetheart a Valentine’s Day breakfast treat. Behold: the homemade pop tart. Adapted from this version by the Novice Chef, these babies are full of sweet strawberry jam and stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth Nutella (a step up from the regular flavored fillings, in my opinion).

One bite will make your lover swoon, guaranteed. Well, not really, but it’ll certainly make them smile. Here’s how to make them:

What you’ll need:poptarts

  • Box of pie crust mixture or the frozen kind that’s already rolled out, thawed

  • An egg yolk

  • Fresh strawberries

  • Strawberry jam and Nutella, or any other filling you fancy

  • A sprinkle of regular or coarse sugar

  • Flour, for dusting

  1. Heavily dust your work surface with flour so that the pie crust doesn’t stick. If you bought the box kind, make the pie crust per the packet’s instructions. Roll out your dough so that it’s rather thin (think how thin real Pop Tarts are for comparison), making sure to rub enough flour on your rolling pin to prevent sticking and snagging.

  2. With a paring knife, cut pairs of rectangles: one rectangle for the base, another for the top so the filling is safely sandwiched together. Make as many pairs as you can, depending on the quantity of dough you have. I made four in total.

  3. Line a baking tray with wax paper and place your base rectangles on top. Then, cut strawberries into slices. Take the larger sized slices and cut a triangle out of the top in the center to form a heart shape.

  4. Place the strawberry hearts on your pie crust tops. Cut around each strawberry so that it leaves a perfectly-sized strawberry heart shaped hole. Set aside.

  5. Take a regular knife and spread a generous amount of Nutella and/or strawberry jam on your base pieces, making sure to leave an inch space around each.

  6. Place your pie crust tops on Nutella/strawberry jam-laden base and press down on the edges with a fork. You may have to dust the fork with flour, as well, to prevent from sticking and tearing the dough.

  7. Place your strawberry hearts in their respective holes. Then, whisk your egg yolk (with about a teaspoon of water) and brush it on each of your little tarts.

  8. Sprinkle each with sugar and then bake for about 15 minutes on 350 degrees until golden brown. Allow to cool for five minutes. Then, indulge.

Whether you’re tied down or ready to mingle this February, these pop tarts will give your heart what it truly wants.
